Taking A Break

I'll be taking a break for a while. Posting intermitenly as time permits. Between my job, grad school, and life's current circumstances time is being consumed quickly. I figured I do my last post for a while in tribute to my dad who passed away February 6th 2007. I wanted to post some songs he would like to hear. Take time to check out American Athlete for regular song postings and lots of good stuff. Check in every so often and hopefully in a month or two I will be back in action. Take Care.

Passed away unexpectedly in his home. US Navy and Vietnam Veteran. 35 year federal employee. Giants, 49ers, and King fan. Gary is survived by his three daughters, grandson, brother, extend family and friends. Services will be private. We love and miss you dad!

One of the most anticipated albums of 2007 has to be the new 2020 Vision released LP, Night Vision from Belgium's Spirit Catcher. Therefore you can only imagine how excited I was when I got my hands on a promo copy of the album. At first glance I noticed that this album is more like a compilation of Spirit Catcher's greatest work combined with some fresh new material, including classics like "Space Crash", "Voodoo Knight", "Roller Coaster", and "Sweet Deal", along with new tracks "Night Vision", "Motown Spring", and "Harmonize". The standout track in my opinion is the cosmic driven "Hidden Memories", which is a seven minute galactic journey that can definately keep the star voyager moving. Overall, I think that this is one of the best release's so far this year, as you get many classic Spirit Catcher cuts, while getting a taste of the future. I believe this LP is going to be released in March, however if you can't wait that long, I would reccommend buying the self-titled single, I know I did.

I took my ipod in to get fixed last weekend. It's been busted up for about 3 months now and I finally got around to taking it in. I told the guy that I wanted to not reset the ipod because I have a ton of tracks on there that aren't on my computer. The guy behind the counter said he fixed it and handed it back to me. So I get home and all, 1400 songs, are gone. I've spent the last week uploading. I just finised uploading Daft Punk Discovery album. And have reached 721 songs. I'm half way there. And trying not to get angry. AHHH.

I recently launched a record label called Beat Freeze Records which consists of two artists, myself - TJ Gorton, and the Future Force, which consists of me and a long time friend and bandmate Noah Clark. The first 12-inch single off of Beat Freeze is Future Force's Night Pony 12". This single includes the orginal version of "Night Pony", which is a cosmic dance gem that is driven by low-end percussion and high energy synths, along with three remixes from some amazing producer’s including Toby Tobias, Rune Lindbæk, and Alex Costa.

The Future Force are already planning to release at least two more records in the coming year in She tasted like a White Russian 12", and Galaxy Lovers/Gunship to Galactica 12".

My appoligies, I didn't realize it has been nearly two weeks since I have posted anything here. In an attempt to justify myself let me say its been a busy two weeks. I got a new dog a week ago which you can see pictures of at My Journal. I also started grad school last Thursday which needless to say, it takes a bit of adjusting to but is exciting none the less. Aside from the new additions to life, the negative for the week has been my ipod breaking - talk about a disaster.

But music...aside from listening to Erlend Oye and Junior Boys way too much this past week, I got my hands on the Arthur Russell DFA remix stuff. Definitly one of my most anticipated releases. And from what I've heard I do believe it's going to be good.

I haven’t gathered a complete feeling for these guys. I enjoyed Morgan Geist Most of All featuring Jeremy Greenspan. And I have to say I like the vocials. But other than that I’m not sure if Junior Boys are something worth sticking to, a guilty pleasure, or nothing at all. I do however think their song The Equalizer is worth listening to, and occasional I find myself hitting the repeat button.

I guess some people feel like they should follow the request of record labels and remove songs and not give songs away for free. Others feel like fuck them, they make enough money. I don't fell one way or another. But I would bet people that take the songs from my blog still buy the artist albums and in fact, no money is being lost by my posting of the songs. And for the sake of arguement, "unfinished" - the song was posted on the Raptures myspace account. Its not like it hasn't been heard in its finished or "unfinished" form.

what can I say, I like them. There 3rd album, "Impeach My Bush" is due out in on July 10th/ 11th and with songs title "Tent In Your Pants" one can assume the album has some potential. They did manage to write such songs as "Shake Your Dixs," "Lovertits," "Fuck the Pain Away," and "Diddle My Skittle." making list, making changes

I got this comment a while back about how my blog tends to be about my personal life. The comment made me laugh, because it is totally true. I can guarantee what is to follow will be way more on the personal life side of things than the music side,you might want to skip to the end and just grab the songs if you aren't up for some reading.

Anyways, I thought about that comment and figured that in my opinion people enjoy certian music because of their background and life history. What people, places, and things we have been exposed to directly relate to what music a person comes into contact with; therefore, music will always be a personal thing directly related to ones personal life.

With that thought out of the way, Its been a rough two weeks since my return from Washington, DC. Generally when life becomes a little confusing, frustrating, and exhausting I tend to do some thinking, a lot for that matter. Thinking generally leads to some soft of life analysis and for me I end up making various list. About four days ago I decided I wanted to start doing more things that I like and enjoy. Simple or complex, I want to start enjoying things again. With that idea, I decided to make a list of all the things I enjoy doing. The list is way too long to post the whole thing (you can read the entire list at HERE. Just click the most recent blog posting...)so I'll only give you a taste:

Taking baths
Drinking double espressos and eating scones in the morning
Sitting outside in the sun
Watching A's baseball
The way I feel when I wear expensive clothes
Reading magazines at coffee shops late at night
Record store shopping after 7pm
Conversations that start with, "remember the time..." or "did you see..." or "I cant wait..." or "I have to tell you..." or "this is good..."
Random conversations with knowledgeable people
Browsing at H M and it taking over an hour due to piddling
Buying cheese and crackers or chocolate at novelty grocery stores and eating it soon after
Leaving the windows open
Buying new plants, potting them, and watching them grow
The rare times I scrapbook
The way I feel after a work out with sweat
Editing photos and making something with them
Organizing things
Adding new post to my blog and searching for songs at the same time
Road Trips
I miss writing and doing it well
Conversations about mere opinion
I like busy work, occasionally
Editing other people work
Drinking cocktails at fancy bars on off nights
Dancing to good music

San Francisco sucked last night. What is it with "way too cool kids" who show up at obviously dance oriented shows and all the do is fucking stand around. I thought they were kidding when they stood motionless through Solvent and Ectomorph but then through MSTRKRFT. It wasn't a concert or some rock star performance, it was a damn dj set idiots. Wait i forgot, you all were way too concerned with how your knock off prada bags were looking to pay attention to the fact that MSTRKRFT only played one song of there own. Note to self: when a performer plays more songs written by Tiga then themselves that generally means it not a fucking show.

Anyways, i did have a rather lengthy conversation with the American Athlete about why Detroit house music is more talked about in the mainstream society compared to Chicago. My reasons focused on social factors surrounding those listening to Chicago house while the American Athlete centered on the fact that Detroit House music is still being created while those who were making Chicago house music are pretty much all deceased. Either way, it was an interesting conversation. I can guarantee far more interesting then what the other 99% of the crowd was discussing.

I was some-what (not much) disappointed when I heard Erlend Øye's Berlin based project Whitest Boy Alive. Its been said that his intent with the project was to make it a "dancier" version of Kings of Convenience. I don't think this was achieved and to me it is a slight let down. But thats not to say the Whitest Boy Alive doesn't produce.It's still good music. Like most I think, I love the music Erlend Øye creates. His vocals are one in a million and when he and Morgan Geist put out (i.e. Ghost Trains) greatness is achieved. So anyways, here are some tracks to listen to. You can also go to The Whitest Boy Alive and watch a video. The album "Dreams" is due out the 21 of this month but not in the US (as always). Enough said.

So I tend to be a little late on things. Perhaps its the fact that I am picky or maybe it just takes me some time to come around. It took me over a year to committ to New Order, 3 or 4 months for Lindstrom, and just recently Booka Shade. Perhaps that is why it has taken me so long to listen to the I Robots comp and actually really like it. I've liked Spacer Woman for a while now, its undeniably awesome. Alright lets talk about DC...
When I was thinking about posting some of my favorite bands to come out of DC (and no I am not talking perhaps the best but certainly some of them are), the first band to come to mind was Q and Not U. The band was around for almost to seven years and with 3 full length releases and two singles, I can't honestly think of a band that did it more "right". From punk to dance punk, whatever you want to call the end result, Q and Not U was fucking awesome. Needless to say, when I heard of their break up last year the world stoped a little. Actually for the entire car ride down Westlake ave. The American Athlete and I sat quite and contemplated the option of crying.

Anyways, with the break up came Ris Paul Ric and Georgie James and President. You can read more about all of this at the Dischord - Q and Not U page or at Q and Not U myspace page.

I'm back. A bit lagging behind, tired as hell, but alive. Lets recap the places I have been in less than a week. Chicago, IL, Lewes, DE, Kansas City, MO, Somewhere in Viginia, Somwhere in Maryland, Washington, DC and back to California. That equals 6 states, one district, and a shit load of time spent up in the air and in airports for lay overs. Aside from the fact that now I want dinner at 3 in the afternoon, the trip was good. im going on vacation. well kind- of. American Athlete and I are heading over to DC to hang out on the coast, eat grandmas food, and walk around the white house. Seeing that I've never been to the east coast, this is exciting. And upon our return we will be buy tickets to go to New York for the first time (any suggestions on where to go and where to sleep would be helpful).

So Im not a big fan of live tracks. Most of the time they sound like shit because some kid snuck a tape recorder in the show and hit record and then stuffed it in his back pocket. That or the lead singers vocals sound nothing like the live recording and then all hope is lost and then the band is downgraded to a "less than cool" on my list because Fuck it - I could sing if I had 10 million dollars and a recording studio.

So we all know Chk Chk Chk is awesome. and of course we love them. and it is certain that we want them to keep putting out albums. I saw them play in Seattle, WA last year at the Crocodile. The singer, Nic, should consider a career as a chip n'dales dancer. The drumming is awesome, amazing, makes you move. And Justin otherwise known to look like Jesus is fucking great! (saw this guy playing with Outhud in Sacramento, CA.... did like a 10 minute programming set..so good)

monday mornings and saturday nights

Though dollar disco got off to a slow start, it ended in regular fashion - packed with people dancing and a few hoes in the back getting there "booty" on. two girls, one guy, and some asian tits. yes tits. I can't say it did anything for me, but I'm sure the overweight sweet dude dancing with the two ladies went home and got some good - not so virgin - vagina.

More importantly .... music. As i stated before, there was more than enough electro so much you might have to scream a few times to deal with the overwhelming irritated feeling one might get from hearing the same sounding songs 3, 4, 5 times in a row. But there were some noteable songs ... heres what i heard:

Not to say that the song is bad but it seems to be an around the the back way of getting lindstrom played.

Bad week. Between betty k dying, barbara having breast cancer, Cindy's possibility of cancer, grandfathers staff infection getting drastically worse, and the shitty weather...I’ve just about collapsed and found it rather difficult to see the positive let alone feel that way. Wednesday thru Thursday have felt like the longest days I’ve had in years. I don’t think I’ve cried, cussed, or stared this much in the last 5 years. the miserable week has lead me to one band for mild inspiration and comfort.

new order. I have always thought myself to be a bigger joy division fan than new order. new order was good but they often felt to upbeat and rather gay. I have had a difficult time getting over the cheesy lyrics and vocals. I will always think older new order is best.. but for this week, new order has provided more for me than joy division ever did.

I’ve listened to these two songs at least twice every day since Thursday and they've done their job well. hopefully this week will get better seeing that in a week and half im leaving to visit DC and would like to be feeling a bitter happier than I am at the moment.

its saturday and that means one thing - Im going Dancing. Dollar disco. Its the one night a month that there is a 50 percent chance I will hear Lindstrom (thank you sam). None of the disco classics or unclassics for that matter will be played but there will be a fair amount of other good stuff. And I am sure there will be enough electro to go around.

Side Note: I went to this record store today near the white trash ghetto and picked up some good stuff. They had some old Michael Jackson 7" and scored David Bowie Lets Dance for 2 bucks. American Athlete got Brian Enos Music for Films and a Patrick Cowley record. Good stuff.

Dollar Disco this weekend. which means dancing, dancing, drinking, and more dancing. It is the one time in the month we actually get the opportunity to hear Lindstrom and Prins Thomas played at a dance night. If we get lucky we might actually hear some disco which would be awesome. Its sad. Trust me I know. I just takes people sometime to come around. But no matter what, saturday night is a guarunteed dance till no ones dancing, stay out late, sleep in the next day, and eat eggs for breakfast dance night and I am looking forward to it.

As always, Konk wrote some of the best songs that came out of New York in the early 80's along with James Chance, ESG, Mars, Suicide, blah blah blah, and every other band on New York Noise, No New York, and N.Y. No Wave. Between No Wave and New Wave I think I am almost satisfied.

My moment of enjoyment so far today came from the 4 minutes and 26 seconds of which I put my headphones over both ears a listened to New Order - Ceremony and refused to be bothered (atleast for the moment). I got to dance to this song this past tuesday at Lipstick. It was good.

Anyways, the undenyable fact being that New Order and Joy Division belong in the top five lists of everyone who ever heard them. Atmosphere will be played at my funeral, Ceremony should be played at every dance night, and Love Will Tear Us Apart is the best pop song ever written. What more could you want.

My brain is rather tired at the moment. Last nights Hot Yoga nearly killed me I think. And aside from the fact that every muscle in my body is sore and I am walking bow legged, my brain is starting to go as well. Seeing that I have little HTML experience, my boss thought it was a brilant idea for me to make an emailer. We'll fuck that. I've been staring at code for the last 5 hours and it still makes little sense to me.

But there is baseball and the A's. And I love the fact that they had a cardboard sign the read "We Miss Kendall" in the dug out yesterday. I think he has 2 more games left in the 4 game suspension and then he will be back. And lastly, screw the Angels.

So I was going through files of old pictures to make space on my computer and I came across Juan Maclean when he did a DJ set in Seattle and then played a show later that night at the Crocidile. That was the second time I had seen him within the year, that previous show was at Chop Suey. I still can't seem to figure out why none of his shows pull in over 30 people and yet crap like Fall Out Boy sells out millions. Anyway, Juan Maclean along with DfA put on some of the best shows i've seen. Example 1: LCD Soundsystem at the Fools Foundation. No windows, brick walls, just sweat, a red light, and james murphy. The show killed expecially comparied to the next night at the Fillmore.

Anyways, DFA along with great shows has brought me awesome records. Example 2: Like when I went to the Record Store and sold back my Tool Box Set and some PJ Harvey cds. With 96 dollars in credit, I then bought every DFA 12" available. Even better was when I ran over in all my excitement and gave the records to American Athlete with the exception of the Beat Connection 12". (my personal favorite).

Anyways, that brings me to the moral of the story and Hot Chip. The moral is DFA makes good music and good music makes you feel good. And then Hot Chip, even if I've had this song for over a year, the song is bound to make you feel good.

Drugs are lame. Way lame(and I'm not talking about smoking pot). Doing drugs (coke, crack, ecstacy, blah blah) on a regular basis says a lot about someones character. Like any of the following:

I have little ambition because I think that I can get anywhere in life while doing drugs.
I have a hard time talking or being around people because I can’t seem to do it comfortably without being on drugs.
I haven’t grown out of being 21.
